The critique for the installation on my porch is now scheduled for Tuesday, Dec 11th @ 5pm.  Followed by opening hours 6pm-9pm

Address:  South of Arnold's Market on old hwy 51, turn right at Brekenridge Appartments Sign.  We're in the little green house across from the duplexes.

2330 S. Illinois, Ave.

Carbondale, IL 62903

My collaboration piece with Jeremy Hunter, and the Applied Science gurus involves using an ultrasonic sensor rigged to make LEDs become brighter as one walks across the room.  I want to evoke the feeling of traveling, when one sees the lights on the horizon become brighter as you move toward them.  I'll also have red flashing lights for the antennas, and two lights that move across the sky representing a plane.  The horizon line will bend 180 degree around one side of the room.  This alligns with the logical idea of space-perceived distance.  The next form of space gets evoked by the dark blue paint skin that will be hanging from the ceiling like a blanket of night sky.  It will have little holes with lights behind them that create stars, some stars will shimmer.  This hints at infinite space.  Finally, there will be a window that looks inside an interior space, suggesting inner space within our selves.

I've been informed that the ultrasonic sensor doesn't have quite the range we hoped, but should be good for at least 8 feet, and Jeremy's trying to make it better.   Finding a space/room to do this piece has been difficult, but i think i have a solution.  My porch is 12 ft by 16ft with an 8ft ceiling.  It is also outside (three of the four walls are open windows) so it naturally has outdoor ambiant noises.  The piece is intended to be veiwed at night, but i have some black tarp i want to place on the outside of the windows to make it dark as possible.  I think i don't want to alter the presence of the porch too much, as it lends itself to man-made conventions (another sub-theme of the piece).  Making the room dark enough would diminish the porch's features enough so i wouldn't need to cover the walls, or paint them.  There is also a window that looks inside our house, which could have a light that turns on after the room gets traversed to its far wall opposite the door one enters.

Here's a shot of my porch.
